Tips and Tricks for a festive Summertime Christmas
By Alicia France
With Christmas only around the corner, we have 7 tips and tricks to help make your home feel festive in the sunshine of the Southern Hemisphere holiday season!
Ditch the Holly. Instead of adding evergreen accents in your home, opt for your favourite spring & summertime flowers. In late November, early December embrace the Peony season by adding sprays around your home. In late December, look for Freesia bunches and bouquets of Sunflowers. Add them to your living and kitchen areas to embrace the long season.
Indoor Outdoor Flow. Avoid the temptation to nestle on the sofa with a hot coco and Wintry films on Netflix, (as traditionally done in the Northern Hemisphere, where the sun sets around 4pm in December). Instead, enjoy the long summer sun by investing in a backyard cricket set or the traditional viking game of “Kubb”. Spend time after dinner winding down with a bit of healthy competition! Take advantage of our sunny season and create summer holiday traditions to continue from year to year.
Mix-up your Playlist. Instead of listening to “Winter Wonderland” or “Sleigh bells in the Snow” over and over; throw in some Beach Boys or Bob Marley to create a nostalgic, yet summery mood.
Vibrant Hues. Opt out of the dark and sultry cranberry and forest green tones and instead inject highlighter yellow, flamingo pink and peacock blues. Changeover your cushions, coasters, table runners and art prints for an economical yet visually effective seasonal trend.
Summer Cocktail Bar. Replace the hot drinks area on your kitchen bench-top with a summer cocktail bar! Keep liquors with glasses, mixer recipe books, limes and ice buckets handy for the whole summer season. Take it a step further and invest a swanky bar cart to complete the vibe. Keep the soda stream and mix-ins nearby to include the kids.
Summer Garland. Instead of faux evergreen garlands, try decking the halls with bright bunting or nautical flags, to give a summery and festive feel to halls and open living spaces.
White Out. If you’re ready for a more permanent change to help your home feel more summery – whitewash dark timber skirting, paneling, door and window architraves. This brightens the room, yet retains the character of the home, making it instantly feel more like summer.
