Sumo Vase

The Sumo Vase is designed to stand alone as an artistic object, yet forms a united family when grouped with other pieces from the collection. Its name references the Japanese sport of Sumo, with a voluminous, rounded body resting on narrow, pointed legs that celebrate the human form. The design plays with the contrast between a familiar vase silhouette and more abstract, artistic detail, questioning what a vase is expected to look like. As a hand-glazed natural product, colour varies slightly from piece to piece, and a liner bag for fresh flowers is included since it isn't fully waterproof.

101 Copenhagen was founded in 2017 by Danish designers Kristian Sofus Hansen, Tommy Hyldahl and Nicolaj Nøddesbo. Drawing on backgrounds in design, fashion and time spent in Japan, the trio blend Scandinavian restraint with Japanese minimalism. The result is heritage-rooted design with a playful, contemporary edge.
