Whisper of the Tides
translation “Bisikan Ombak”
“Whisper of the Tides” was created by a reclusive wood artist from Central Java known locally as Adi Wirawan, a craftsman celebrated in his village not for volume, but for the emotional movement he carves into timber. This piece began its life as a naturally fallen mango tree, a tree that once grew beside a small river where Adi spent his childhood.
The twisting form was inspired by the rhythm of the tide that swirls around the riverbanks near his home. Adi often says that water doesn’t speak in words, it speaks in motion. That belief sits at the heart of this sculpture.
He spent weeks studying the grain of the timber before carving the first line. As the form emerged, he carved upwards in a continuous spiral to echo the way water pulls and releases, rises and falls. The sculpture’s gentle expansion at the top symbolises the moment a wave gathers its strength, while the flowing twist that falls through the centre represents movement, renewal, and the quiet power of nature.
The matte chalk‑washed finish was achieved using a local technique involving hand‑sanding and mineral pigment blending, allowing light to catch the curves softly, almost like sunlight brushing across water at dawn.
Only one piece was ever made. Adi believes that true expressions of nature “should never be repeated,” and for that reason, this sculpture remains entirely unique.
